I  know this is a old thread but I was just checking things out and seen this. That being said I thought I'd throw my own version of the torsion bar removal tool into the hat. I could wiggle them slightly  but couldn't pull them out. So I wrapped the bar with a phone book and clamped on a set of 3 jaw welding vise grips and tapped on the grips until she slid out. Just that simple. Cleaned up the bars not a mark on them. Just the black paint and silver paint dabs.  Our phone book here on PEI is only about a inch thick. Not one of your big monsters from a big city.
That is al.
